MOTM4L Mentees Enjoy Special Night with Lu Dort and the Oklahoma City Thunder

Mentor on the Move for Life is always looking for opportunities to expose our youth to positive experiences that inspire confidence, create lasting memories, and reinforce the value of hard work and perseverance.

Earlier this year, our mentees were invited by Oklahoma City Thunder star Lu Dort to attend the Thunder's game against the Brooklyn Nets. For many of the young people in attendance, it was an unforgettable opportunity to experience an NBA game up close while cheering on one of the league's most respected players.

The excitement began long before tip-off. From entering the arena to watching some of the world's best athletes compete, our mentees were fully engaged in the experience. The highlight of the evening came as they watched Lu Dort take the court and contribute 10 points in a hard-fought game against our hometown Brooklyn Nets.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Lu Dort for thinking of our youth and providing them with this incredible opportunity. Acts of generosity like this create meaningful moments that young people carry with them long after the final buzzer sounds.

While the Oklahoma City Thunder ultimately fell short of reaching the NBA Finals this season, their impact on our youth was already a championship-level victory. The opportunity to witness professional athletes competing at the highest level, while learning about the dedication and discipline required to succeed, provided valuable lessons that extend far beyond basketball.

Experiences like these are an important part of the MOTM4L mission. Exposure to new environments helps young people broaden their perspectives, build self-confidence, and recognize that opportunities exist for them both on and off the court. These moments reinforce an important message: with commitment, determination, and support, they can achieve great things in their own lives.

Mentor on the Move Meets the Harlem Globetrotters

We believe that mentorship extends far beyond the classroom. Some of the most meaningful lessons happen through shared experiences that inspire young people to dream bigger, build confidence, and see new possibilities for their future.

Recently, a group of MOTM4L mentees had the opportunity to attend a Harlem Globetrotters game, accompanied by MOTM4L Founder Tyrone Gardner and Peter Rose of Hydro Québec, one of our valued community partners and sponsors. The event provided our youth with an unforgettable experience as they met players, interacted with positive role models, and witnessed the excitement and energy that have made the Harlem Globetrotters a global phenomenon.

From the moment the doors opened, the excitement was evident. Our mentees were fully engaged, asking questions, taking photos, and soaking in every moment. Meeting the players face-to-face helped transform what they had only seen on television into something real and attainable. For many of the youth in attendance, it was a reminder that success is built through dedication, perseverance, and hard work.

Events like these are about much more than basketball. They provide opportunities for young people to step outside of their daily routines and experience environments that broaden their perspectives. Exposure to new experiences helps young people build confidence, develop social skills, and envision themselves pursuing goals they may not have previously considered.

Prepare Today, Protect Tomorrow: Join the NY Citizen Preparedness Training Program on July 2, 2026

No one ever expects a disaster to happen to them.

Yet every year, communities across New York face severe weather events that disrupt lives, damage homes, and leave families searching for answers during moments of uncertainty. As storms become more frequent and more extreme, preparation is no longer optional. It is essential.

Mentor On The Move 4 Life is proud to partner with the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services to host the NY Citizen Preparedness Training Program on July 2, 2026. This important community event is designed to equip residents with the knowledge, confidence, and resources needed to prepare for emergencies before they occur.

The training provides an introduction to responding to both natural and man-made disasters. Participants will learn how to create a family emergency plan, prepare emergency supply kits, communicate during crises, and take practical steps to protect their loved ones when every second matters.

The reality is that emergencies do not send invitations. They arrive without warning. When disaster strikes, preparation can make the difference between panic and confidence, confusion and action, vulnerability and resilience.

This training is about more than emergency response. It is about empowering families. It is about ensuring that parents know how to keep their children safe, that seniors have a plan in place, and that neighbors are equipped to support one another during difficult times.

Strong communities are built long before emergencies happen. They are built through education, planning, and a shared commitment to looking out for one another.

Each family that attends will receive a preparedness kit to help begin their emergency readiness journey. These resources, combined with the training provided, will give participants valuable tools they can use immediately to strengthen their household preparedness.

Building Connections and Celebrating Progress at the Queens Chamber of Commerce Holiday Gala

This year, members of the Mentor on the Move 4 Life (MOTM4L) team had the honor of attending the Queens Chamber of Commerce Holiday Gala, a signature gathering of leaders shaping the future of Queens. Invited by our valued sponsor Hydro-Québec, we were able to participate in an evening filled with inspiration, connection, and meaningful conversations about how local organizations can continue uplifting the community.

The gala brought together prominent business executives, civic leaders, and innovators committed to moving the borough forward. Among the standout interactions of the evening was a conversation with Cheryl McKissack Daniel, the 2025 Business Person of the Year and the President & CEO of McKissack & McKissack—the oldest minority/women-owned design and construction company in the nation. She shared powerful insights on how honoring legacy while embracing forward-thinking vision creates bridges that strengthen both community and industry. Her leadership and perspective resonated deeply with our mission at MOTM4L.

District 21 City Council Member Elect, Shanel Thomas Henry, also attended to gala imparting the importance of cooperation between community governance local business leaders. We all are enthusiastic to see the impact she brings to her district.

The President and CEO of the Queens Chamber of Commerce also delivered remarks that underscored the importance of fostering growth, connection, and opportunity throughout the borough. His message reflected the Chamber’s commitment to ensuring Queens remains a thriving place for businesses, nonprofits, and residents alike.

Adding to the significance of the evening, New York Governor Kathy Hochul was in attendance, emphasizing the importance of collective investment in community-driven progress across the state.

Empowering Youth On and Off the Court: MOTM4L Hosts Basketball Clinic with Community Partners

Mentor on the Move 4 Life (MOTM4L) proudly teamed up with the Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens to host an energizing and inspiring basketball clinic that brought together over 20 young athletes for a day of skill-building, mentorship, and fun.

Adding star power and heartfelt support to the event, New York native, former NBA player, and current Long Island University (LIU) Head Coach Rod Strickland joined us for the clinic — and he didn’t come alone. Coach Strickland brought several LIU basketball players who spent the afternoon engaging with the youth, teaching drills, sharing stories, and reinforcing the importance of discipline, teamwork, and confidence.

For the young participants, having access to high-level athletes and coaches on their home court was more than exciting — it was transformative. Many of the youth had the chance to ask questions, run plays alongside college athletes, and gain firsthand insight into what’s possible when hard work meets opportunity.

We are thrilled to share that our Founder and Lead Mentor, Tyrone Gardner, has been honored with the Making a Difference 2025 Award by Urban Dove Charter School — a recognition that speaks to his dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to empowering young people.

For the past two years, Tyrone has partnered closely with Urban Dove to mentor students weekly, offering guidance, life skills, and consistent support. What began as a 10-week pilot program has now grown into a full school-year initiative, with three additional mentors a testament to the program’s impact and to the MOTM4L team's ability to connect deeply with the youth they serve.

A Mentor Who Shows Up—Every Week, Every Season

Tyrone’s leadership is rooted in presence. Week after week, he brings encouragement, structure, and positivity to the classroom. Whether he’s coaching students through personal challenges, helping them set goals, or simply giving them the space to be heard, his influence has created a safe and transformative environment.

From Clippers to Confidence: How Astoria Teens Are Building Their Futures Through Mentorship

When you hand a young person a pair of clippers, you’re not just teaching them a trade — you’re giving them the tools to shape their own story.

This fall Mentor on the Move 4 Life, proudly celebrated the graduation of seven student barbering apprentices, each completing training hours toward their New York State barbering license.

For many of these students, this wasn’t just about learning how to fade or line up — it was about finding confidence, discipline, and a sense of purpose. Through MOTM’s mentorship model, each apprentice was paired with a professional mentor who guided them not only in technique, but in entrepreneurship, client care, and community impact.

“It’s more than cutting hair,” said one apprentice. “It’s about learning who I am and how I can help others look and feel their best.”

These young barbers represent what’s possible when mentorship meets opportunity. MOTM4L is expanding its vocational programs in 2026 to include culinary artsand STEM-focused experiences, opening even more doors for local youth.
